Year 7 Observation Day                                         Friday 22nd October 2010

The day started with morning registration.

Period 1 - 2 ICT

The first lesson of the day was ICT where the class were working on their design slides for a PowerPoint presentation about the School.

Behaviour - If the students were expressing bad behaviour then they were made an example of by having to stand up or stand in the corner of the class. Although they are being forced to stand, they are still expected to participate in the lesson.

The teacher showed good classroom management skills and gave clear instruction to the learners. The lesson had clear objectives set out on the board and the teacher interacted well with the class by asking the learners questions.

Peer assessment can also been seen in this lesson.

Period 3 Literacy

In this lesson the there was a substitute teacher so the lesson was not planned. The lesson started with silent revision and then a spelling test.

Behaviour – can be seen to be addressed in this class.  The teacher had good control of the class by using his voice to address the learners who are not getting on with their work.

Period 4 PE

The teacher used football to bring together the class to work as a team. This gave the class the opportunity to learn how to work together.

Observation of a PE lesson was very different because you could really see the class excel. Some strong individuals in this class clearly enjoyed the lesson.

One student forgot her PE kit and so this resulted in an automatic detention.

Period 5 Geography

The lesson had clear objectives on the board and the teacher gave clear instruction to the class. They were being asked to think about planning.

Behaviour was immediately addressed using, 3,2,1 count down for quietness. The learners seem to be tired and ready for half term by this point.

Period 6 Music

The teacher expressed good classroom management skills and addressed behaviour immediately. Clear objectives were set out on the board and the learners were then given clear instruction. Active participation from all the learners can be seen in this lesson.

All the teachers were actively involved in the learning by going round and checking that all individuals understood the task in front of them and gave support where needed.

Throughout the day, I had been working with Tyrell Fielding who experiences some difficulties and needs a little more support than the others in the class. I was also able to support the other learners in the class, which gave me the opportunity to get to know names and see what level individuals were working at.

7CB have some behaviour issues, which have to be constantly addressed in order for learning to take place. Throughout the day, good use of the schools behaviour policy can be seen taking place.

It was a worthwhile and good opportunity for me to get to know the different characters in my tutor group.
